Microdermabrasion
Mechanical exfoliation that resurfaces and refines the skin's outer layer with no downtime. One of the most consistent, reliable treatments for improving texture, tone, and overall skin quality month after month.
0 Days
Downtime after microdermabrasion. You can return to your normal activities immediately, including makeup application, the same day.
Microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped handpiece to mechanically exfoliate the skin's outermost layer, removing dead and damaged skin cells, while gentle suction lifts debris from the pores. The result is immediately smoother, cleaner, and more refined skin with improved radiance and a more even tone. Microdermabrasion works physically rather than chemically, making it suitable for a wide range of skin types and tones, including patients who are sensitive to acids or other active ingredients. Microdermabrasion is also safe for pregnant or nursing mothers.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Our estheticians perform all microdermabrasion treatments at Element Dermatology under the direct oversight of Dr. Barry LaBine, a board-certified dermatologist. Here's what you can expect at your appointment:
- Your Consultation: Your esthetician will assess your skin type and concerns before selecting the appropriate treatment settings. Microdermabrasion intensity can be adjusted to suit different skin sensitivities and concerns, so your treatment is calibrated to you rather than applied at a one-size-fits-all setting.
- The Treatment: Your skin is cleansed, and the diamond-tipped handpiece is moved across the area in systematic passes, exfoliating the surface while suction lifts away the loosened debris. The sensation is a mild scratching combined with a gentle vacuum pull. Most patients find it comfortable and even relaxing. Sessions take approximately 45 minutes.
- Results and Follow-Up: Your skin will feel noticeably smoother immediately after your appointment, and a mild pinkness may persist for a few hours. There’s no downtime. You can apply makeup and return to normal activities the same day. Monthly treatments maintain a consistent renewal cycle and produce cumulative improvement in texture and tone over time. Microdermabrasion also helps skincare products to penetrate deeper into your skin.
Microdermabrasion is the kind of treatment you build into your routine and then wonder how you lived without it. Consistent, comfortable, and genuinely effective, every single month.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microdermabrasion
Is microdermabrasion for all skin tones?
expand_more
Yes. Because microdermabrasion works mechanically rather than through heat or chemical reaction, it doesn’t carry the same risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that some laser treatments and strong chemical peels can present for patients with more melanin-rich skin. It’s one of the most skin-tone-inclusive treatments we offer. We’ll always assess your skin before your appointment to confirm the right approach for your specific type and tone.
What does microdermabrasion feel like?
expand_more
Most patients describe it as a mild scratching sensation combined with a gentle vacuum pull across the skin. It’s not painful, and most patients find it comfortable throughout. The level of intensity can be adjusted based on your skin sensitivity and tolerance. Numbing isn’t necessary, and there’s no significant discomfort during or after the treatment.
Can microdermabrasion help with acne or acne scarring?
expand_more
Microdermabrasion can help with mild, superficial acne scarring and post-acne marks by accelerating cell turnover and refining skin texture over time. It’s not recommended for patients with active, inflamed acne breakouts, as working over active blemishes can spread bacteria and worsen breakouts. For patients with more significant acne scarring, SkinPen microneedling or a series of chemical peels may be a more effective approach. We’ll help you identify the right treatment during your consultation.
What should I avoid after microdermabrasion?
expand_more
For the first 24 hours after your treatment, we recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, strenuous exercise, and active skincare ingredients like retinol, AHAs, and BHAs, as your skin will be more sensitive than usual. SPF is essential in the days following your appointment. Beyond that, there are no significant restrictions, and most patients return to their normal skincare routine the following day.
