Fine Line & Wrinkles

Wrinkles don't have a single cause, which is why they don't have a single solution. Getting the best results means understanding what's driving them for your specific skin.

Fine lines and wrinkles develop through several mechanisms, including collagen loss, repeated muscle movement, volume depletion, and sun damage, and they often overlap. At Element Dermatology, we approach wrinkles by addressing each contributing factor rather than applying the same treatment to every patient. The goal isn't to erase every line. It's to help you look like a well-rested, healthy version of yourself.

About This Condition

Understanding What’s Actually Causing Your Lines

Not all wrinkles are the same, and treating them effectively starts with understanding which type you're dealing with. A line that forms when you smile is driven by a different mechanism than one that's present when your face is at rest. A deep fold alongside the nose needs a different approach than a fine line on the cheek. The right treatment depends on the type of wrinkle, its location, and the underlying cause.

The main types of wrinkles and what causes them:

Dynamic Wrinkles

Lines that form from repeated facial muscle movement (frowning, squinting, raising eyebrows, smiling). They start as expression lines that disappear at rest, then become permanently etched into the skin over time. Neuromodulators (Botox and Daxxify) are the most effective treatment for this category.

Static Wrinkles

Lines that are visible even when your face is at rest, caused by collagen loss, skin thinning, and cumulative sun damage. They don't respond to neuromodulators the same way dynamic wrinkles do. Laser resurfacing, microneedling, and collagen-stimulating treatments address these most effectively.

Volume-Related Folds

Deep folds and lines like nasolabial folds and marionette lines that develop as facial fat and bone structure decrease with age, causing the overlying skin to sag and fold. Dermal fillers restore the lost volume beneath these folds, lifting and softening them from the inside out.

Gravitational and Texture Lines

Lines and creases that develop as skin loses elasticity and begins to sag under gravity. Often appear on the neck, jawline, and cheeks. Skin-tightening treatments like Sofwave address structural laxity, while resurfacing treatments improve the skin's surface quality in these areas.

We Want You to Look Like You, Not Like Someone Who’s Had Work Done

The thing we hear the most from our patients is that they’re worried that Botox or other neuromodulators will make them look frozen, overdone, or obviously altered. At Element Dermatology, Dr. LaBine's philosophy is that every treatment should make you look like a well-rested, healthy version of yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Will Botox make me look frozen or unnatural?

Not when it's done well. The frozen, expressionless look people associate with bad Botox results from too much product in the wrong places, not an inherent property of neuromodulators. At Element Dermatology, Our team uses conservative doses and takes a detailed approach to placement that preserves your natural expressions while softening the lines you want addressed. The goal is always that you look like yourself on a particularly good day, not like you had anything done to you.

What’s the best treatment for deep lines around the mouth?

It depends on what's driving them. Deep vertical lines around the lips (lipstick lines) are often a combination of volume loss, sun damage, and muscle movement. The most effective approach typically combines a small amount of neuromodulator to reduce the muscle activity driving the lines, filler to restore lost volume and support the lip border, and a resurfacing treatment like Halo or a MicroLaser Peel to improve the surface texture.

Is PRF a good alternative if I don’t want foreign substances injected?

Yes. PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) is derived entirely from your own blood, so there are no foreign substances involved. It triggers your body's own regenerative response, stimulating collagen and elastin production over time. The results are more gradual than those of fillers or neuromodulators, but it's a genuinely effective option for patients who want to improve skin quality and reduce fine lines naturally.

When should I start treating wrinkles?

Earlier than most people think! Prevention is always better than correction, and starting a maintenance plan in your late twenties or thirties yields more natural, long-term results than waiting until lines have deepened and more aggressive correction is needed. A consistent BBL Hero and Moxi routine, combined with neuromodulators when dynamic lines first appear, can significantly slow the aging process. If you're in your forties or beyond, we can still produce meaningful improvement. It just requires a more comprehensive approach.
