What to Expect During Your Treatment

At Element Dermatology, all injectable treatments are performed under the direct oversight of Dr. Barry LaBine, a board-certified dermatologist. Here's what you can expect from your appointment:

  • Your Consultation: We start by understanding your natural lip shape, your facial proportions, and exactly what you want. We'll give you an honest assessment of what's achievable with your anatomy and tell you whether a different approach would serve you better than filler.
  • The Treatment: A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to maximize comfort. Injections take approximately 60 minutes. We use the RHA Collection of resilient hyaluronic acid fillers, as well as Restylane, which are designed to move naturally with the lips rather than sit rigidly, which is particularly important in an area that moves constantly throughout the day. There's typically some swelling immediately after, which should resolve within a few days.
  • Results and Follow-Up: Final results settle at around two weeks. We always start conservatively and recommend a follow-up at the one-month point to assess your results and add a little more if needed. If, for any reason, you're unhappy, RHA filler can be dissolved.

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid to add volume, definition, and shape to the lips. Because hyaluronic acid is biocompatible, it integrates well with your tissue and carries a low risk of adverse reactions. The result feels and looks more natural because the filler adapts to your movement rather than restricting it.

Not at Element Dermatology. The overdone look comes from placing too much product or ignoring the natural proportions of your face. Our approach is conservative by design. We start with a small amount of filler, assess results at two weeks, and add more if needed. We’re much more interested in a result you love at two weeks than one that looks dramatic on the day. If you share reference photos during your consultation, we’ll give you an honest assessment of what’s realistic and right for your specific anatomy.

How long does lip filler last?

Lip filler lasts between six and twelve months. The lips are a high-movement area, which means the filler breaks down a little more quickly than in areas like the cheeks. Individual results vary based on the product used, the amount placed, and your metabolism. Over time, with consistent treatment, many patients find their results last a bit longer as the treated area gradually responds to repeated treatment.

Does lip filler hurt?

The lips are one of the more sensitive areas of the face, so we apply a topical numbing cream before treatment to maximize your comfort. Most patients find the procedure very manageable. There may be some mild swelling and tenderness afterward, which typically resolves within a few days. Most RHA fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which further reduces discomfort during injection, and Pro-Nox (nitrous oxide) is available should you want it.

Can lip filler be dissolved if I don’t like the results?

Yes. RHA filler, like all hyaluronic acid fillers, can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is one of the genuine advantages of hyaluronic acid over other filler types. If you’re unhappy with your results for any reason, we can dissolve the filler and return your lips to their natural state. This is rarely needed, but knowing the option exists gives many first-time patients peace of mind going into treatment.
