What to Expect During Your Treatment

All Aerolase treatments at Element Dermatology are performed under the direct oversight of Dr. Barry LaBine, a board-certified dermatologist. Here's what you can expect from your appointment:

  • Your Consultation: We assess your skin concerns and skin tone to confirm Aerolase is the right approach. For many patients, Aerolase opens treatment options that weren't previously available. We'll also discuss whether combining it with BBL Hero or using it as part of our vein treatment protocol makes sense for your goals.
  • The Treatment: No numbing cream is needed for most patients. The Aerolase handpiece is moved across the treatment area, delivering rapid pulses of laser energy. Most patients feel a brief, mild warmth with each pulse, usually around a 1 out of 10. Sessions take 30 to 45 minutes. There's no downtime and no recovery period.
  • Results and Follow-Up: Results develop gradually over the following weeks. Vascular concerns and rosacea generally respond well within two to four sessions. Acne management may require a longer series spaced two to four weeks apart.

The 1064nm wavelength, at which Aerolase operates, passes through melanin with less absorption than shorter wavelengths, which is why Aerolase is safe for all skin tones, including darker complexions, where many other lasers carry a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Is Aerolase safe for darker skin tones?

Yes! This is one of Aerolase's biggest advantages. Many laser treatments pose a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in patients with more melanin-rich skin because the laser energy is absorbed by melanin as well as the target tissue. The Aerolase Neo's 1064nm wavelength bypasses this risk by passing through melanin with minimal absorption, making it one of the most skin-tone-inclusive laser treatments available. We’ll still assess your skin carefully during your consultation, but Aerolase opens treatment options for patients who may have been told other lasers are not suitable for their skin tone.

What does Aerolase treat?

Aerolase is effective for rosacea and persistent facial redness, broken capillaries and vascular lesions, acne and acne-related inflammation, brown spots and age spots, general pigmentation and skin discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles, and enlarged pores. It works well for skin issues resistant to other treatments and for patients who need a laser option safe across all skin tones. It can also be combined with other treatments like BBL Hero for rosacea or used as one of three devices in our laser vein treatment protocol.

How does Aerolase feel during treatment?

Most patients describe a brief, mild warmth with each pulse, similar to the light snap of a rubber band, but gentler than most laser treatments. The exceptionally short pulse width is what keeps discomfort to a minimum. No numbing cream is required for most patients, which is unusual for a laser treatment of this caliber. You can return to normal activities immediately after your session. Your skin may be mildly pink for an hour or two, which is the extent of most patients' post-treatment experience.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on the concern being addressed. Vascular concerns and rosacea typically respond well within two to four sessions. Acne management requires an initial series of five treatments, each spaced one to two weeks apart. For anti-aging protocols, most patients begin to see improvement after two to three treatments.
