Dermaplaning gently removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the skin’s surface. The result is an immediate improvement in smoothness, radiance, and texture that’s visible from the moment you look in the mirror after your appointment. Unlike chemical exfoliation, dermaplaning contains no acids or active ingredientsand carries no risk of sensitivity or reaction. This makes it one of the most universally appropriate treatments at Element, suitable for all skin types. It’s also one of the few facials safe to use during pregnancy.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Our estheticians perform all dermaplaning treatments at Element Dermatology under the direct oversight of Dr. Barry LaBine, a board-certified dermatologist. Here's what you can expect:

  • Your Consultation: Your esthetician will review your skin type and concerns before your treatment begins. If this is your first visit or you're managing a specific skin concern, your case may be reviewed by Dr. LaBine to ensure that dermaplaning is the right choice for you.
  • The Treatment: Your skin is cleansed, and the esthetician uses a sterile surgical scalpel held at a precise angle to gently exfoliate the skin's surface in short, feathering strokes. The sensation is mild and generally very comfortable. Most patients describe it as a light scraping feeling with no discomfort. The full treatment takes approximately 45 minutes.
  • Results and Follow-Up: Results are immediate. Your skin will feel noticeably smoother and look brighter as soon as the treatment is complete. There’s no downtime, and you can apply makeup and return to your normal activities right away. Most patients schedule dermaplaning monthly to keep their skin renewal process consistent.

Dermaplaning is one of those treatments that feels almost too simple for how effective it is. Forty-five minutes, no discomfort, no recovery, and you leave looking like a better version of yourself. That's hard to argue with.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dermaplaning

Will the hair on my face grow back thicker or darker after dermaplaning?

No. This is the most common concern patients have before their first appointment, and it’s a myth. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair, which is structurally different from terminal hair. Shaving or removing vellus hair does not alter its color, texture, or growth rate. Your peach fuzz will grow back exactly as it was before your appointment.

Is dermaplaning safe during pregnancy?

Yes! Dermaplaning is one of the few facial treatments that’s generally considered safe during pregnancy. Because it’s entirely mechanical and involves no active chemical ingredients, it avoids the concerns associated with many acids, retinoids, and other topical treatments during pregnancy. If you’re pregnant and would like facial treatment, dermaplaning is usually our first recommendation. We also offer a dedicated Mommy Facial specifically designed for pregnant patients.

How often should I have dermaplaning done?

Most patients benefit from monthly dermaplaning, which aligns with the skin's natural cell turnover cycle. Scheduling too frequently can over-sensitize the skin, while spacing treatments too far apart allows significant buildup to accumulate. Monthly appointments maintain a consistent renewal process and keep the skin's surface in optimal condition for both skincare absorption and makeup application.

What’s the difference between dermaplaning and microdermabrasion?

Both are manual exfoliation treatments, but they work differently. Dermaplaning uses a sterile scalpel to physically remove dead skin cells and vellus hair in a single pass. Microdermabrasion uses a device that uses a diamond-tipped tip to abrade the skin's surface. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair in addition to dead skin cells, which microdermabrasion does not. Both are excellent treatments, and the right choice depends on your specific skin concerns and goals. We can help you decide during your appointment.
